Build a Medieval Army Troops Tier List
Who to field for cash runs, castle holds, and prestige-era armies in Medieval War Tycoon.
This Troops Tier List ranks army pieces in Build a Medieval Army (Medieval War Tycoon) by how they help the real loop: steal and return flags, defend your yard, and hold the hilltop for +20% income. Letter grades are starting points—read the role notes before you sell your entire composition.
For unlock paths and lore-style roster notes, use the Units Hub, roster, and Prestige Units. For Robux soldiers that overlap this list, also see Gamepasses Tier List.
Ranking criteria
- Flag impact: Does the unit help you create openings or escort returns?
- Base impact: Does it discourage thieves and win home fights?
- Hill impact: Can it take or hold contested high ground?
- Availability: Starter-friendly vs prestige-gated vs gamepass-gated.
- Replacement cost: Can you field it again after a wipe?
Tier overview
S tier — Build around these when available
Prestige exclusives (when unlocked). Top exclusives define late compositions because they were designed as progression rewards. They are S-tier after you can field them reliably—not while you are still learning returns. Follow How to Prestige before you reset just to “touch S tier.”
Praetorian (ZedCo group freebie). Free power is efficient power. Claim it early; it punches above its “price” of a group join and stabilizes early skirmishes.
High-impact gamepass soldiers such as Heavy Soldier, Spartan Soldier, Roman Legion, Berzerker Giant, and Giant ZED when they match your bottleneck. Giants and heavies often anchor fights; legion-style presence helps coordinated pushes. Exact value shifts by lobby density.
A tier — Excellent in the right plan
Assassin Soldier. Great for picking key targets and creating flag chaos. Slightly less “set and forget” than pure anchors—needs intentional pathing.
Archer Squad (+4) / ranged squads. Strong for hill space and layered defense when you keep them alive. Pair with frontliners; do not ask archers to be your only gate.
Cloned Troops + Troop BUFF compositions. Volume and buffs turn mediocre cores into map presence. Especially strong when you already understand defense rotations.
Catapult Troop / Sky Fort style pressure. Siege and elevated pressure tools shine against turtles and prolonged fights. Less ideal as your only early purchase.
B tier — Solid, situational, or early staples
Standard recruitable soldiers from the normal tycoon track. They are the engine of early game. You will outgrow pure starter lines, but skipping them to wait for prestige is how accounts stall. Use Early Game Income to know when to spam versus specialize.
Heal Spell supported armies. Heal is a pass, but it elevates otherwise B-tier blobs into sticky holds. Factor it when comparing raw troop names.
C tier — Flex, cosmetic-adjacent, or misused picks
Cosmetic-led choices (for example, prioritizing Flaming Arms vibes over bodies). Effects from codes like flames3 or pres1234 do not earn a combat tier.
Off-role misuse. Dropping your entire prestige exclusive line into a solo deep raid while home is empty turns S units into C results. Tier assumes correct deployment.
Suggested compositions by goal
Income / flag focused. Mix mobile pressure (Assassin-leaning tools) with enough escorts to finish returns. Keep a B-tier home squad always. Contest hill between returns. Guide: How to Capture Flags.
Castle / defense focused. Heavies, clones/buffs, archers, heal support, clear gate coverage. Practice garrison rules from the defend guide.
Prestige climbing. Favor economy efficiency and survivability over highlight units until the reset. Stack hill (+20%), Premium (+10% cash), codes, and maybe Double Income; simulate with the Income Prestige Planner.
Balanced pubs. One anchor package at home, one pressure package for hill/flags, flexible mid units that can rotate. Reassess after every major loss.
How codes and passes interact with tiers
Cash codes (casher72, startcash55, maze74, big2xmascash, etc.) let you field higher tiers sooner—redeem via How to Redeem Codes. Double XP/Income change how fast you reach prestige exclusives. None of that replaces map sense taught in How to Play.
Common tier list mistakes
- Copying a late-game YouTube army at minute five.
- Ignoring Praetorian because it is free.
- Ranking units without separating hill versus home roles.
- Prestiging into exclusives you cannot afford to restock.
- Using scripts to “auto perfect army”—ban risk on Scripts Hub.
Keep this list useful
After patches, compare notes with Updates Hub and sibling Gamepasses Tier List. When a new exclusive arrives, place it by role impact, not hype. For controls while micromanaging squads, see Controls Hub.
Field roles, not logos. The perfect medieval army is the one that banks returns and still has a gate when you look back.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Build a Medieval Army players.
What is the best troop in Build a Medieval Army?
It depends on role. Prestige exclusives and high-impact gamepass soldiers lead late fights, while early game favors affordable volume plus the free Praetorian.
Are gamepass troops included here?
Yes, with notes. For purchase priority and Robux value, also read the Gamepasses Tier List.
Where do prestige units rank?
Top exclusives are S-tier when unlocked and restockable. They are not beginner openers—use How to Prestige first.
Is Praetorian actually good?
Yes for the price of joining the ZedCo group. Free early power is one of the best efficiency picks in the game.
Should I only buy S-tier units?
No. You need a full composition with home garrison and hill/flag roles. Mixed A/B cores win more pubs than one lonely S unit.
